2017 was a big year for the mobile web as its usage has finally overtaken desktop for browsing. No longer are we always sat at our desks when using the web, we’re on the train, on the bus, on a plane or simply on the sofa!
This means as web designers we need to be a little more focused than usual in 2018 on the ever growing mobile audience from now on until well, forever! Mobile design and optimisation can no longer be an after thought. As designers it is our responsibility to think of new ways to display information in a beautifully aesthetic way but also keep UX (User experience) in mind and think about intuitive layouts and navigation.
We had an interesting experience when designing our own mobile site. We had realised that some of our small animations massively increased loading times on mobile, so these were scrapped! Instead we went with a leaner, faster more effective approach.
Another website I saw working well recently was G-Star Raw, I really liked their simple yet intuitive design and frankly its simplicity kept me on the site for longer and I managed to find what I needed with little effort! This is the exact kind of innovative thinking that we all need to consider and try to utilise to keep turn those leads into sales.
To summarise, consider the following when designing your next mobile project:
- UX First
- Keep it simple
- Intuitive navigation
- Cut the excess
